Welcome to Buttercups!

As a class we promote the Gospel Values and ask the children to treat others how they would like to be treated, the children are asked to reflect on their actions and take responsibility for their actions.

In Year One the children begin to follow the National Curriculum and we use the "Letters and Sounds" program for Phonics. We follow a creative curriculum which makes links between the different subject areas. The areas of learning include the core subjects English, Mathematics, RE and Science.

As well as the core subjects we also have activities in Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Computing, Music and Physical Education. These are linked to the topics being covered for each half term with each subject being delivered for an equal amount of time throughout the year.

Children in Year One will also receive daily phonics lessons as large emphasis is put on developing basic skills of Reading and the children are required to read at home regularly and promote the use of sounding out the more difficult words.  They are also given some high frequency words to practice at home to help with their reading and spelling.

Lessons are briefly introduced to the class usually as a whole and then the children are split into groups to work on different activities. Some children will be working independently choosing from a range of specified activities and others will be supported by the adults working in the room. The children have no set place to sit in the classroom but move according to the activity at hand. They are encouraged to work collaboratively at all times, using appropriate vocabulary and respecting the rights of others in the class.

The children participate in daily guided reading sessions where they work as a small group on a specific aspect of reading. This may range from using inference and deduction to answer questions about the text, to looking at the author’s use of language. The children will have regular opportunities throughout the day to read independently or with others in the class.

During the Autumn Term

During our first topic, 'Around the United Kingdom' we will be learning about the different countries that make up the United Kingdom and their capitals.  We will also learn about some of the main landmarks in these countries.  In Science we are looking at animals including humans, which will involve naming and describing common animals and naming humans body parts.  In P.E. we will be developing skills in gymnastics and dance. Our art topic this half term is going to be looking at the artist Picasso and in Design and Technology we are making our own vehicles and masks.  In the second half term we will be also be learning about the history and geography of our own city, Stoke-on-Trent.  We will be looking at the history of the Pottery mining industry.  We will be learning about Programming and computational thinking in Computing and exploring sounds in Music.

If you have any other websites which you feel would help other parents and children please send them to me and we can add them to the lists.

The class will have weekly spelling tests on a Friday, which will generally relate to our weekly English lessons. These will be WOW words that we can use in our work throughout the week, to help us improve our writing.

Later in the year we will also be introducing times tables tests and the children will be working on their 10, 2 and 5 times tables, with a check on a Friday. The children who get all of these correct will receive a certificate in the weekly praise assembly. The children will be given homework on a Friday and this will be collected in from the children on the following Wednesday.

We would also ask that the children in Buttercups bring in their PE kits at the beginning of the half term and they will be sent home to be washed at the end.  It is better for these to stay in school as we may need them on any day of the week, not just for a P.E lesson.

School Meals

The children in Year 1 will have access to a breakfast club and this means that there is a snack available for all.  These will vary from day to day with items such as a slice of toast, half an oatcake, a crumpet or a flapjack.

In addition, every KS1 child is now eligible for free school meals. Parents are still able to choose whether they would prefer their children to have sandwiches.  The menus are available to view on the newsletters or on the website.
