Welcome to Year 2.

This year has flown by and there is only half a term to go.

In English, your child will participate in daily guided reading sessions where they work as a small group on a specific aspect of reading. This may range from using inference and deduction to answer questions about the text, to looking at the author’s use of language. Daily phonic lessons will take place to develop the basic skills of reading. We use the "Letters and Sounds" program for Phonics teaching. During the half term, the children will cover a range of fiction and non-fiction writing genres.

In Maths, this term, we will be completing activities on reading and writing two digit numbers. The children will also be ordering numbers on a number line and using the greater than and less than symbols to show when one number is smaller or larger than another number.

In Science, we have been learning about plants and I look forward to seeing your bean plants after half term.

In RE, we follow the Birmingham Diocese Catholic framework. This half term our units are Pentecost, Special Celebrations, The Church and The Mass.

Children will attend Whole School Mass on Thursday mornings at Sacred Heart. There will be Family Masses throughout the year so please come along and support. Dates to follow on Newsletter.

Our class author for the year is Francesca Simon, if you have any books at home please bring them in to display in our class reading area.

Every child will be heard read once a week individually and twice a week during guided reading sessions. The children will have regular opportunities throughout the day to read independently or with others in the class.

This year, your child will bring a number of books home to develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. Please ensure you record in their diary each time you have read with your child.

Some children will be invited to attend additional reading sessions which start at 8.30am. These sessions are to accelerate progress.

Homework: A piece of homework will be set each Friday. Please encourage your child to complete this work and return it to school by the following Wednesday.  I really appreciate it when parents leave notes on their child's work if they have found any aspects of it difficult so that I can address this in class. Key words: Your child will bring home a copy of their key words which are to be learned at home. We would like the children to be able to read and spell the key words. It is important that your child's PE kit remains in school at all times. This is because the PE day could change from week to week.

Celebration assembly will take place on Friday afternoons in class and we welcome you to join us. Each week, one child will be given a 'Star Award' for particularly good work, effort, behaviour or attitude and Head Teacher awards. In addition, any children who have received awards outside of school are encouraged to bring them along to our Friday assembly to share.

The class will have weekly spelling and times tables test on a Friday. The children will be working on their 10, 2, 5, 3 and 4 times tables including division facts. The children who get all of these correct will receive a certificate in the weekly praise assembly.
